    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, June 8th, 2012   –  The Panthers, Team A which consist of the Ministry of Communications and Works has been named the 2012 Public Service Week Champions. The announcement came at the closing/prize giving ceremony to officially mark the conclusion of Public Service Week 2012.

     

    Public Service Week, which was held from May 20-31 under the theme, A Public Service for Efficiency, Excellence and Innovation saw all four teams competing in friendly competition for bragging rights for a year as champions of the week. 
     
    In addition to being named overall champions, Team A also won the softball competition and was awarded the trophy for most supportive ministry. Team D Eagles, which consists of the Premier’s Office and the Ministry of Finance placed second overall and won the dominoes, basketball, track and field and open house competitions.
     
    Team C, which consists of the Ministries of Education and Culture and Health and Social Development placed third and won the volleyball competition and Team B which consists of the Deputy Governor’s Office and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour placed fourth and won the scrabble, bowling and cheerleading competitions.
     
    Speaking at the closing ceremony, Deputy Governor Mrs. V. Inez Archibald, under whose portfolio public service week falls, spoke about her pleasure in the week particularly the vast number of work that went into putting on the displays for Open House and the magnitude of information shared.
     
    “Thank you to the ministers for their support throughout the week of activities and for actively taking part in the annual observance. I am grateful that we have a partnership between the political directorate and the public service,” the Deputy Governor shared.
     
     
     
    The Deputy Governor congratulated all four teams but expressed that the Panthers deserved the overall championship trophy, “Your open house was absolutely fantastic, your track and field, cheerleading and your overall energy was infectious throughout the week. I encourage all of us to extrapolate all this excitement into your performance.”
     
    Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communication and Works Mrs. Arlene Smith-Thompson chaired the ceremony and gave a brief history of Public Service Week and also spoke about why the week is observed annually.
     
    Sharing her team’s recipe for winning with the rest of the teams Mrs. Smith-Thompson said, “The decisive factor was that we were consistent. We came together in the spirit of competition and cooperation, by harnessing our troupes to compete for a common goal. The huge margin of victory was attributed to the participation of Head of Departments.
     
    Public Service Week is held annually to highlight the contributions of the public service to the Territory’s development and to give members of the public an opportunity to gain a better appreciation and understanding of the work of the public service.
