Press Release

SIMPSON BAY, St. Maarten, June 10th, 2012 — Princess Juliana Int’l Airport operating company N.V. (PJIAE) and St. Maarten Department of Civil Aviation, Shipping & Maritime have partnered to host the ICAO/FAA Aerodrome Certification Inspectors Workshop for Caribbean Region.

The workshop, geared toward teaching aviation professionals how to conduct and prepare for aerodrome inspections, begins on Monday, June 11 and will continue through Friday, June 15.

Louis Halley, Department Head of Civil Aviation, Shipping & Maritime, noted that this is the first workshop of this nature to be held in St. Maarten.

Some 13 employees of PJIAE will participate in the intense five-day workshop geared toward aerodrome inspectors and operators.

There will be facilitators from Mexico and the USA conducting the workshop, which will be held at the Sonesta Great Bay Beach Resort.

The workshop will be attended by professionals from Caribbean countries and territories such as Barbados, Grenada, and Turks and Caicos, and also by persons from North America and the United Kingdom.

Participants are expected to follow a myriad of modules including hands-on training in Airport Inspection, Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Inspection and Post Inspection.

Topics such as Wildlife Hazard Management and post-Inspection Administrative Procedures will be addressed during the workshop.

“Although most attendees are aviation inspectors and operators, this training will give all participants the skills and knowledge base to execute their jobs more effectively especially when time comes around again for airport certification,” said Halley.

PJIAE will be the site for the external training, and key areas of the airport will be used during the weeklong course.

“We are delighted to partner with the Department of Civil Aviation to host such an important workshop for the first time ever in St. Maarten,” said PJIAE Marketing and Communications Manager, Kalifa Hickinson.
