BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A man of no fixed place of abode, but who frequents Newtown, is alleged to have assaulted a police officer and was shot during the process on Saturday evening (June 9).
The wounded man’s name was given as Stuart Hanley, also known as ‘Jelly Man’, ‘Jackson’ and ‘James Brown’.
According to Police Press and Public Information Officer Sergeant Stephen Hector, sometime after 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, police responded to a break-in report in Newtown.
“On arrival at the scene, police saw the suspect, Stuart Hanley, and during the process of apprehending him he assaulted one of the officers with a cutlass. In defence, the officer shot him in the leg,” Hector said.
Hector also said that a unit from the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was summoned and Hanley was transported to the JNF Hospital, where he was admitted and treated for his injury.
This media house learned that the incident occurred on the Newtown Bay Road and eyewitnesses claimed to have seen when Hanley was being chased by an officer who subsequently shot him.
On arrival of the unit from the EMS, a medical technician was seen attending to the wounded man who was lying on the sidewalk on seaward side of the Bay Road.
