Press Release

BRADES, Montserrat (June 12th, 2012) – Montserrat’s Youth Ambassadors Claris Yearwood and Ian Gerald have joined other CARICOM Youth Ambassadors in Suriname for five days of activities to foster youth development and increased dialogue on youth involvement.

The two were appointed in May to represent Montserrat in the CARICOM Youth Ambassadors (CYA) programme said Youth Officer Ms. Loni Howe.

Youth Ambassador Yearwood is the reigning Festival Queen 2011/2012 and also holds the position of President of Emerald Youth and Vice President of Genesis steel orchestra.

Youth Ambassador Gerald has previously served in this role and is the Vice President of the Rotaract Club of Montserrat.

Both Gerald and Yearwood are presently attending their first meeting as CYA’s in Suriname for a planning and social networking skills training workshop.

The expected outputs of the June 11-13 meeting are a three-year institutional framework informed by the research findings of the CARICOM Commission on Youth and the Declaration of Paramaribo on the future of youth in CARICOM.

There are also plans to work on an online virtual regional youth social network with appropriate content to enhance capacity within the CYA program to manage and maintain the social network.

Gerald and Yearwood are also expected to participate in a CARIOM and Union of South American States high level youth exchange on June 14-15.

The meeting will facilitate an exchange of views between the youth of CARICOM and the chair of the CARICOM Conference of Heads of Government. The high-level Youth Exchange will focus on promoting dialogue on the development of youth within CARICOM and deepening integration, networking and cultural exchange among CARICOM youth.
