ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, June 13th, 2012 – Amidst bright smiles and happy faces, students of the Eslyn Henley Richiez Learning Centre were acknowledged for the continued progress over the past school year at their annual award ceremony on June 12.
Supported by family members, well-wishers and House of Assembly members, the nineteen students received awards in skills ranging from excellence in memory to creativity, sailability, communication and comprehension skills and oral response.
Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn in his remarks congratulated the school’s principal Mrs. Vansittart Huggins and her staff for their tireless contribution.
“My vision for all of our children, and I stress, all of our children, is for them to become productive and contributing members of our society. I believe all children are blessed with talents and abilities that our community should get the benefit of.”
Ms. Lorna Dawson Special Education Officer with the Department of Education congratulated the school for implementing the Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment programme which helps students become independent thinkers and learners. She said it was refreshing to see it incorporated across the school’s curriculum.
At the award ceremony, attendees witnessed the crowing of Mr. Deandre James as the new Mr. EHRLC. Ms. Tasha Isles regained her crown from last year as the 2011 – 2012 Miss EHRLC. Additionally, Principal Huggins presented all teachers with tokens of appreciation. The award ceremony was chaired by Ms. Veta Greenwood.
Government officials in attendance included Honourable Ronnie Skelton, Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Mark Vanterpool, Minister for Communications and Works and House of Assembly members Honourable Alvera Maduro-Caines and Honourable Archibald Christian.
On March 13th, 1998, the Fort Charlotte Children’s Centre was renamed in honour of its first full time teacher and principal Mrs. Eslyn Henley Richiez. The school’s goal is to assist students to live a fuller social life while its guiding principal is to teach students self help.
The Ministry of Education and Culture advocates for the equitable education of all children and continues to work to find resources to help students excel and achieve excellence.
