BASSETERRE St.Kitts, June 2012 -- Many teenage girls may not have completed or passed enough CXC/GCE subjects because they got pregnant, and had to defer or curtail their studies. Despite this circumstance, they may still have the desire to continue their education to reach their true potential and to seek better job opportunities to provide for their family.
The EFA High School Scholarship is designed to provide the opportunity to single moms who never got the chance to complete high school or to get at least 5 CXC/GCE subjects. This scholarship is available to women who are motivated to acquire a first degree but do not have enough CXC/GCEs, which is usually an entry requirement.
Ashworth College, a partner university of Education for Advancement (EFA) provides an online high school diploma. The curriculum is regionally accredited and would allow graduates to move on to completing associate or bachelors degrees.
One successful applicant will be awarded a full scholarship valued at $1000US.
To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must:
? be a citizen of St Kitts and Nevis
? be a single mom who has less than 5 CXC/GCEs.
? be between 18 and 40 years
? have never received financial assistance for education before
? submit a 500-word essay “Why do I want to obtain a high school diploma”

Local Representative, Leah Sahely, indicated that the idea came up on the eve of Mother’s Day. She said, “We thought it would be one way to recognize mothers and saw this scholarship as one tangible way to provide support to single moms who wanted to advance themselves but didn’t have the entry requirements or financial means. We were pleased to have Ashworth College come on board to offer this scholarship”.
The deadline to apply for an EFA High School Scholarship is 31 July, 2012.
