Charlestown Nevis (March 7 2005) The Nevis Co-operative Credit Union (NCCU) scholarship recipients, Ms Danielle Martin and Ms Renell David who shone in the recently concluded CXC and Cape examinations, earlier today (Monday) were the proud beneficiaries of EC$1000.00 each.
During a brief ceremony held at the Government Information Services studio, General Manager of the Nevis Co-operative Credit Union Mr. Sydney Newton noted that the two young ladies were very special to the union and that they have been scholarship holders for the past 5 to 7 years.
Today, we are very happy to be able to present to them a token of our appreciation in the form of a monetary contribution, said Newton. In noting that the students did exceedingly well, Newton said that the scholarship program had been reintroduced in 1995.
It has sustained up to 26 students from Form 1 to 5 at the Charlestown and Gingerland Secondary Schools, the 6th Form College in Nevis and the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College in St. Kitts, commented the General Manager. Because of the success of the Credit Union, the Board of Directors has decided to increase the amount of money disbursed for the program.
He expressed that a 100% increase was allocated for Forms 1 & 3, 67% for Form 2 and 25% for Forms 4 & 5. He also expressed that students writing exams in Forms 5 & 6 will have their fees paid by the Credit Union. He wished the students every success in their future endeavours and added that the union was very happy to be a part of the development of the youths on the island.
While the President of the Nevis Credit Union and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Dwight Morton made the presentations to the young ladies in the presence of their parents, Education Officer, Mr. Joseph Wiltshire made brief remarks on behalf of the Department of Education.
On behalf of the Department of Education, first I would like to commend Renell David and Danielle Martin for the excellent work which they have done, in fact both have done well in the overseas examinations, said Wiltshire. I have known both young ladies for a long time, I know that they have worked hard and the result of the examinations is due to hard work and commitment.
In congratulating the young ladies, the Education Officer stated, I would like to say thank you to the Nevis Co-operative Credit Union for realizing the importance of the development of our only resource, our people and by contributing to the educational development of these two young ladies by affording them scholarships.
The young ladies expressed their gratitude to the union and called upon the students to take education very seriously. Ms David expressed that they should put their minds to what every they want to achieve, set goals, study hard and youll accomplish what you set out to do. On the other hand, Ms. Martin expressed that education was very important in todays world, and you need to be committed to achieve your goals.
