A True Beauty With A Purpose: Miss World SKN 2012 visits HMP

Press Release

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts: June 14th, 2012 - Miss World SKN 2012 visits HMP as a part of her commitment to being a "Beauty With a Purpose".

Our Miss World delegate, Markysa O'Loughlin  visited the Her majesty's prison on June 14, 2012 to enlighten the prisoners on the importance of taking control of their lives and making better choices.

Markysa says "The high incarceration rate in St. Kitts is a spin off from the high crime rate.  The incarcerated have a personal responsibility to turn around their lives but the onus is also on us (the rest of society) to do whatever it takes to ensure that first time offenders do not become repeat offenders. I reached out to them because I needed to impart a message with them that being incarcerated is not the end. I told them they still have the opportunity to redeem themselves and become productive citizens"

She spoke to the prisoners about the importance of staying positive even when circumstances are not in their favour.  She also revealed that it meant a lot to her simply interacting and sharing with the prisoners.  "I saw some familiar faces, some my age, it was difficult seeing so many of them behind bars because to me its a waste of our human capital" says Markysa.

She continued "We shouldn't lock the lock and through away the keys. They are human just like you and I and all they need sometimes is compassion, support and a push in the right direction to make better choices. All wished me well in my endeavors and made me very comfortable"

Markysa's visit comes at a time where Operation Future recently launch their campaign to sensitize the nation on the seriousness of the crime situation.

Her visit took a fun twist when it turned into an "impromptu-mini talent show". After speaking with the men, she asked them to song along to popular Bob Marley tune "No Woman No Cry". Notable, local Superstar Dagah of IREPSKN Music Group who was apart of her team was then specially requested by prisoners to sing a few of his most popular tunes. After that 3 members of Operation Future also took turns on the mic to sing their original songs.

Miss World SKN is now focusing her “Beauty With A Purpose” campaign on addressing issues of the marginalized portion of our population. She believes that political division, dysfunctional families, social degradation, gender biases and a host of other problems damper the progress of the federation and it her wish to see a better St. Kitts and Nevis and hopes that she can positively impact society through her efforts.
