BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – VICTORY came for the Delphic United Newtown Football Club on Saturday (June 16) when the team pushed through a challenging competition to cop its fifth Premier Division Championship.

With the iron band playing in the background before hundreds of fans and spectators, Newtown and the Conaree Football Club took to the field at Warner Park in the ultimate battle for supremacy.

Newtown, obviously hungry for the win, had gained the upper hand on Wednesday (June 13) winning that game 2-nil against Conaree; the first of three possible games.

Still being anyone’s game, a relentless Conaree did their best to overcome the obstacles which were presented them.

No sooner than the game had begun the ball found the back of Conaree’s nets off the boot of N Alexis ‘Lecky’ Saddler in the fourth minute of play.

The first half played out with several chances for Conaree to score the equalizing goal and for Newtown to widen its lead. However, the match’s next and final goal was not bagged until the 80th minute.

A free kick for Newtown provided the perfect opportunity for that team to score with Ian ‘Rumpy’ Lake securing his team’s second goal and the championship.

Moments before the game concluded, tempers seemed to have flared and members of both teams exhibited some aggression towards each other causing many to wonder if it would have been a repeat of last year’s unfortunate happenings. However, civility was the order of the day and the situation was eventually brought under control.

The blowing of the whistle signalling the end of the match caused Newtown fans and supporters to erupt in jubilation.

Following the match, Manager of Delphic United Newtown Football Club Dr. Mark Hodge told this publication that he is happy for the win but is “more relieved than excited”.

He explained that the Club had endured a very trying year which included the suspension of specific players from the first five games of this recently-concluded league, following an incident in June 2011.

He said the battle was well-fought and the Newtown camp is in celebration mode.

Last year’s championship was won by the RAM’S Village Superstars for the fourth time in the 13-year history of the tournament.
