IRD Staffers Challenged To Set The Mould

ST. JOHN'S Antigua, June 18th, 2012  --  The managers at Inland Revenue Department (IRD) declared their agency a model for the public sector; and Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer challenged them to keep up the momentum.

The occasion was the official opening ceremony of the new premises of IRD at Woods Centre on Friday, June 15.

Before the Prime Minister, Manager of the Revenue Administration Reform Project Everett Christian heralded the shift in corporate culture, the customer-first ethos and the commitment to professionalism.

“I have taken note of the comment made by Mr Christian that the intention is for Inland Revenue to set the bar for other ministries, departments and agencies to follow, and I am going to hold you to that promise. I say this because it is good to see individuals demonstrating the desire to strive to be the very best, and that is an attribute that should be emulated,” the Prime Minister said.

Praise flowed, from the chief servant, for the staff and management, as well as for Minister of Finance, the Economy and Public Administration Harold Lovell, for physical relocation to premises owned by the government and for the obvious change in corporate attitude.

“I also wish to suggest to you today that it was … resolve to transform the way our revenue agencies operate; this resolve to bring equity to entire tax structure; this resolve to make Antigua and Barbuda a better place to live, to work and to invest that has brought us to this venue today,” PM Spencer said.

The Prime Minister also thanked the regional and international agencies that have provided technical assistance and funding to improve the department’s operating systems and the skills set of the employees.

The agencies are the European Union, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Caribbean Centre of Development Administration (CARICAD), the Caribbean Regional Technical Assistance Agency (CARTAC), the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the World Bank.
