    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, June 19th, 2012   –    Residents of the Virgin Islands, especially the East End/Long Look communities, will soon enjoy the benefits of improved softball and basketball facilities now that Government has signed petty contracts for the rehabilitation and enhancement of the Greenland field.

     

    The contracts signed this morning represent Government’s commitment to building fit communities through sports and recreation development. Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn signed the five petty contracts on behalf of Government. 
     
    One contract was signed with Mr. Cliff Williams in the amount of $34, 605.96 to supply and install an all weather outdoor basketball court.
     
    Another contract was signed with Mr. Jerome Lettsome in the amount of $40,172.96 to construct and erect concrete block walls. Mr. Nathaniel Penn whose contract is in the amount of $30,514.22 will purchase and install four additional steel-based light poles for the softball field and basketball court.
     
    A contract was also signed with Mrs. Arona George-DeWindt in the amount of $27,282.20 to prepare for the installation of sod for the Greenland playing field, while Mr. Alexander Thomas will constructing and erecting fencing works and supply and install panel back stop for the softball field in the amount of $68,756.02. All works are scheduled to be completed by August 31.
     
     
     
    Minister Walwyn who holds the portfolio for sports and recreation facilities in the Territory during the signing this morning said, “We have some very tight timelines as the field has been out of commission for a number of years.”
     
    “We want to ensure that you move expeditiously to get the work completed because the community needs this facility. We are depending heavily on you to move with diligence and get this job completed,” he added.
     
    Member of the House of Assembly and Eighth District Representative Honourable Marlon A. Penn who witnessed Minister Walwyn’s signature, said that he along with members of the seventh and eight districts are eager to get the project started. He welcomed the contract signing and encouraged the contractors to sign the contracts and begin the work.
     
    Mr. Dion Stoutt, Project Coordinator for the Ministry of Education and Culture was also present.
     
    The rehabilitation of the Greenland Recreational Field is in keeping with Government’s commitment to “Build a Fit Nation” with functional and well equipped sporting facilities for use within the communities.
