Press Release

ST. JOHN'S Antigua, June 20th, 2012  --  Local law enforcement authorities are receiving assistance from a Forensic Arson Investigator from Barbados as they continue to investigate the June 10th, fire at LIAT’s Hangar.

Speaking in the Upper House on Wednesday, Minister of National Security Hon. Dr. Errol Cort says a two person team lead by Barbadian Inspector, Roderick Walcott arrived in Antigua last night and has already met with Antiguan investigators.

“Given the nature of the fire and more particularly given the magnitude of what transpired there, we recognize that we need some additional assistance to complement what the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda has been doing in terms of investigation.” Dr. Cort said.

Meanwhile he Management of LIAT (1974) Limited in a statement responded to a report appearing in the Antigua Observer Newspaper (June 19) and on Observer Radio, suggesting a cause for the recent fire at the LIAT hangar.

Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr. Brian Challenger noted that investigations by local law enforcement officials were continuing and that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. In that context it was extremely unfortunate for speculative reasons to be highlighted in this manner.

He noted that LIAT remained available to the media through its Corporate Communications Department adding that the Company would continue to provide information to the public once it becomes available.

LIAT continues to provide regular services throughout its network and wishes to express appreciation to it employees, customers, suppliers, its partners and the general public for their continued support during this period.

Sometime after 10pm Sunday (June 10), the LIAT hangar on the eastern end of the airport’s compound went up in flames. The fire destroyed one of the Company’s Dash 8–300 aircraft V2 LGH, a maintenance hangar and two offices.

LIAT (1974) Ltd is reporting losses to the tune of EC$35 million.
