ST. JOHN'S Antigua, June 20th, 2012  --  Antigua and Barbuda joins the rest of the world in observing Public Service Day on Saturday 23rd June, 2012. As part of the celebration a week of activities has been planned to commemorate this occasion under the theme, “Building a Public Service that works for You”.

On December 20, 2002, the United Nations General Assembly designated June 23 of each year as United Nations Public Service Day. It encouraged member states to organize special events on that day to highlight the contribution of public service in the development process.

And as such, the day was created to: celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community; highlight the contribution of public service in the development process; recognize the work of public servants; and encourage young people to pursue careers in the public sector.

To this end, a week of activities is being organized by the Department of Public Administration in the Ministry of Finance the Economy and Public Administration and will include a Church Service, An appearance on the Monday Night Live Programme on ABS TV, A Media Day, An Open Forum to discuss whether “The Public Service can be an employer of First Choice”.

The celebrations will also include A Street Fair where the various Ministries and Departments will be showcasing what they do. The week climaxes with an awards Banquet where persons will be recognized for their outstanding contribution to the public service.

The observance of Public Service Day recognizes that democracy and successful governance are built on the foundation of a competent civil service.
