Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, June  21st, 2012  - The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) will be focusing on bridging the digital gap that exists between women and girls through a competition, as they continue to celebrate World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.

“The purpose of the competition in addition to celebrating this year’s theme of “Women and Girls in ICT” is to reiterate the importance of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) locally and to get women and girls more involved in the world of telecoms,” Human Resources Director, Mrs. Karia Christopher told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

“We are going to be launching a competition in the coming days to encourage women and girls in the BVI to tell us (TRC) through Facebook or twitter in 140 characters or less how ICT have impacted their lives,” Mrs. Christopher explained.

“Globally, there is a clear disparity between males and females as it relates to ICT and through this competition we want to encourage women and girls to use technology as it is needed to advance one’s self educationally and in the world of business today,” she said.

According to Mrs. Christopher, “The contest will only be opened to women and girls, sharing two categories of 16 and under and 17 and over. To enter the competition persons can follow us on twitter @trcvg and twit their message, or like us on Facebook at Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of the Virgin Islands and post a message on our wall.”

Following the competition which will conclude on July 13th there will be a press conference to announce the winners. First prize winners will receive the IPAD 3, second prize victors will take home the iPhone 4s and third prize recipients will collect a Kindle Fire.

TRC’s CEO, Mr. Guy Lester Malone is especially excited about this campaign as he believes that women should take a more active role in technological opportunities in the BVI. The CEO added that ICT is very much a part of our everyday lives, impacting everything we and therefore encouraging women and girls to participate in the competition.

The purpose of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is to help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the internet and other information and communication technologies can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide. World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated annually since 1969.
