Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, June 21st, 2012   –    The Public Information and Education (PIE) subcommittee of the National Disaster Management Council (NDMC) is partnering with the private sector in an effort to reduce the threat to life and property with the launch of their public awareness campaign on hurricanes, floods and landslides.

The Chairman of PIE, Geraldine Ritter-Freeman said, “PIE is working with several local companies to better prepare the public in the event of these hazards and/or a disaster. For this next week, we should start to see posters, publications, radio and television messages, and also special incentives. I hope everyone participates!”

Tips on how to secure property, stock up on steadfast supplies, create a disaster kit and locate emergency shelters will be shared during the campaign.

Subcommittee member, Linton Leonard said, “It is important for the public to get to know these tips for themselves and their families. We want BVI households to memorize the facts and procedures. In the event of an actual emergency these tips may be much harder to receive and we need to be ready.”

Governor Boyd McCleary CMG CVO said forecasters have predicted a less active hurricane season, with a probability of 10 named storms and four possibly developing into hurricanes, but has warned residents to be aware, prepared and alert throughout the season.

The PIE Subcommittee is comprised of volunteers from the local media and Government response agencies and is responsible for dissemination of warnings and timely information to the public before and during an emergency.
