CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – DEPUTY PREMIER of Nevis Hon. Hensley Daniel urged Nevisians to leave politics out of Culturama.
The Deputy Premier, who is also the Minister of Culture, made this appeal on Friday night when the Culturama Festival was officially launched with a colourful ceremony at the Charlestown Water Front.
Minister Daniel welcomed visitors to Nevis and said Culturama was a time to “enjoy and participate.” He said the Festival has lived on since its inception 31 years ago.
The Minister of Culture said the Festival transcends politics and urged participants to “leave politics out of Culturama”. He said this year’s Patron, Norman Liburd, has contributed towards Nevis culture for more than 50 years.
Chairman of the Culturama Festival Committee Halstead ‘Sooty’ Byron called on all heritage organisations and other stakeholders to support the annual event. “Culture is a business. Culturama puts a lot of money in the hands of the homes of Nevisians,” he said.
Byron said it has been challenging to get contestants to participate at this year’s Culturama, adding “Recruitment has been difficult.” He hailed Earl Rawlins for coming up with the creative Culturama’s 2008 slogan: “Participate Make it Great! Culturama 2K8!”
Meanwhile, the Talented Teen Pageant and the Junior Kaiso Monarch shows will be held at the Cultural Complex on Wednesday, July 30.
