    Police uproot 28,496 marijuana plants for the year

    ~~Adz:Right~~ BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SOME 28,496 marijuana plants have so far been uprooted for the year by the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force in its quest to rid the Federation of that illegal activity.

     

    The most recent exercise, as reported in a Police press release, took place on Saturday, July 24, 2008 by the District ‘B’ Crime Response Unit as a continuation of “its search and eradication programme in the cane fields around the island”.

     

    “…Members of the unit uprooted and destroyed one thousand and fifteen (1,015) marijuana plants ranging in height from one foot to 10 feet. The plants were found in two separate lots in the cane fields at Ottley’s Project…”

     

    Just days prior, the Police saw even greater success with the uprooting of 9,150 marijuana plants from canfields in the country area.

     

    “On Thursday 24th July 2008 at about 5:00 a.m., police conducted operations between the areas of Ottley’s to Cayon and a total of 9,150 marijuana plants were found growing in several cane fields and were uprooted and taken into custody. The plants ranged in height from seedlings to 10 feet.”

     

    No one has been held accountable for these finds, but all of the plants were destroyed by fire at Conaree.

     

    In other news, five individuals have been arrested and charged with drug-related offences.

     

    Hermitage Road, Nevis residents Darren Joseph and Dion Weekes were on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 arrested and charged with the offence of “possession of cannabis”.

     

    Another Hermitage Road resident, Zbol Tyson, was arrested and charged with a Wednesday, July 23, 2008 offences of “possession of cannabis” and “possession of cannabis with intent to supply” to Marcella Tyson, who resides in the said area. A Police press release informs that Tyson was also arrested and charged with “possession of cannabis with intent to supply”.

     

    Barnes Ghaut, Nevis resident Patrick Daniel was also on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 charged with a “possession of cannabis” offence.

     

    Two juveniles of the Conaree area were arrested and charged with a July 22, 2008 incidence of “simple wounding”.  The 15 and 16-year-olds, who reside at Conaree and Market Street respectively, are expected to appear before the court shortly.
