Newly Trained Officers Told to Share Knowledge

Acting Chief Immigration Officer, Mr. Dennis Jennings

Roadtown; Tortola: – Acting Chief Immigration Officer Mr. Dennis Jennings is urging the newly trained immigration officers to share their new skills and knowledge to help create greater efficiency in the Department of Immigration.

Speaking after the completion of last week’s training exercise, Mr. Jennings acknowledged that the participants represent only a fraction of the cadre of immigration personnel and therefore it is imperative that the wealth of knowledge disseminated at the training be shared with the officers who were not in attendance.

“Our officers have done well to protect our borders with limited resources but this certainly is an added experience for them and we certainly expect to see it transformed into their work, not only with those who attended but we expect them to impart it to their colleagues so that everyone would be on the same wave-length,” Mr. Jennings said. ~~Adz:Right~~

He further stated “We have realised that immigration is not what it used to be, things have become more sophisticated, people are planning new strategies on how to get into the Territory and officers have to be in tune with what is happening.”

The Acting Chief Immigration Officer pledged his department’s intention to pursue more training initiatives so that officers can continuously improve the skills set required, particularly with regard to fraudulent documentation and the different techniques used by people who try to circumvent immigration procedures.

Noting the Territory’s dependence on tourism and international business companies for a large portion of revenue, Mr. Jennings said it is essential that “immigration officers are firm in their decisions but at the same time, offer the courtesy that would keep visitors happy.”

The Immigration Department envisions that by 2011, it will be staffed with “highly trained and motivated Officers, utilizing advanced technology in providing exceptional services to the Public.”

The Department of Immigration falls under the Premier’s Office and is responsible for securing the borders of the Territory through the delivery of efficient and impartial service.
