Press Release (SKNIS)

Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 25, 2012 (SKNIS): The Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC) Science Club will recognize primary schools in St. Kitts-Nevis who have participated in the Organic Gardening Competition at CFBC during an award ceremony on 27 June.

Schools will be awarded prizes in the categories of  Recording, Photographing, Experimenting, Optimum Plant Growth and Communication. The overall winner for this competition dubbed Take 5.2 will be announced at the ceremony. The Science Club will help to develop the winning primary school’s garden as reward for their projects.

During Take 5.2, each school was given 5 plants, comprised of spinach and pak-choi, in perforated bags which were filled with a special blend of potting soil made from carbon-rich fill-to-press and top soil exposed by local road construction.

Schools competed throughout May to see which would have done the best job at maintaining and documenting plant growth in their five containers.  A lab report chart was also given to each school where students were required to enter weekly observations of plant growth, signs of pest and disease impacts, and any plant mortality.

Science Club President Tishanna Hazel stated that Take 5.2 was aimed at encouraging students’ participation growing their own vegetables, which will intern prepare the way for their greater interest in organic gardening in the years to come.

“Schools have indicated that Take 5.2 has been an enjoyable, learning experience for students,” Ms. Hazel said.  She also explained that the CFBC Science Club will continue to advise and encourage other students and members of the community on becoming self sufficient by growing their own vegetables.

The CFBC Science Club is an organization whose mission is to educate the CFBC community and the wider society about environmental issues, to improve environmental practices on campus and throughout the island and to sponsor environmental activities.
