Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, June 27th, 2012 –  In an effort to increase awareness on the effects of hurricanes, floods and landslides and to encourage preparedness, all residents are eligible to receive prizes for reciting disaster preparedness tips.

The Public Information and Education (PIE) Subcommittee of the National Disaster Management Council in collaboration with several local businesses will offer incentives to the public for reciting a specific disaster preparedness tip, which will be aired weekly on ZBVI’s Almanac.

In order to win a prize, the first five persons must say the tip exactly as it was announced on radio to the cashier at the specified supermarket or business. The first tip will be aired on Tuesday, July 3.

Participating businesses include Bolo’s Department Store, CCT Global Communication, Bobby’s Supermarket, UP’s Cineplex and A-Value Supermarket. Gift basket prizes are varied and range from canned foods to top-up vouchers and movie tickets.

The committee would like to extend gratitude to the participating businesses for so willingly partnering with the committee in this effort.

“I whole heartedly believe in the DDM’s slogan ‘It is Better to Prepare and Prevent than to Repair and Repent’ and it is up to all of us as a community to ensure that all residents are 100% prepared, to the best of their ability, to weather any storm”, said Chairman of the Committee, Mrs. Geraldine Ritter-Freeman.

The public is encouraged to tune in every week to ZBVI’s Almanac at 7:50am and 2:15pm over the next month to hear that week’s disaster preparedness tip.
