BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A fire that began shortly after 4:00 p.m. today [July 29] caused extensive damage to the Food Centre located directly across from St. Kitts Breweries before members of the Fire and Rescue Services were able to contain the blaze.

Billows of black smoke were pouring out of the western side of the structure by the time a fire truck arrived on the scene at approximately 4:25 p.m., but quick action by the firemen had the raging fire under control within10 minutes.

No one was reported injured in the incident, but the storage area of the Food Centre was completely destroyed.

Fire officials who spoke to SKNVibes said they did not have any information at this time as to the cause of the fire.

Employees of the Food Centre also declined to give a comment on the origin of the fire.   ~~Adz:Right~~

This marks the second time within a one-year period that the western storage shed of the Food Centre has been completely gutted by fire, with the previous incident occurring on September 25, 2007.

In an earlier interview with this media house, David Kawaja, owner of the business, had indicated that that area of the building was used to store foam and plastic packing materials.

Reports reaching SKNVibes indicated that Kawaja is currently off island.
