Federation records 2nd road fatality for year

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A young man from Newtown lost his life last evening (June 29) after suffering injuries from a traffic accident in which he was involved earlier that afternoon.

The deceased, Tyrone Fyfield, was – according to the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force’s Traffic Department – involved in a two-vehicle accident that occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the junction of Wellington Road and Florence Nightingale Lane, New Pond Site.

SGT Calvin Amory of the stated Department told this publication that according to his understanding, the incident occurred when motor omnibus H902 – which was being driven by Dwight Harris of Keys Village – was travelling along Wellington Road in the direction of the airport, and Fyfield – who was operating motorbike P4879 - was exiting Florence Nightingale Lane onto Wellington Road.

The officer explained that passengers were aboard the omnibus when the incident occurred but, according to his information, neither they nor the driver of that vehicle suffered injuries.

Fyfield, however, was rushed to the Joseph N. France General Hospital via Emergency Medical Service where he was reportedly receiving treatment for his injuries.

Unfortunately, after an almost six-hour fight, he succumbed to his injuries. SGT Amory said the police received word of Fyfield’s demise sometime after 9:00 p.m.

He informed that an autopsy would be performed on Fyfield’s remains sometime next week in order to determine the exact cause of death.

The young man – said to be in his early 30s – is the Federation’s second road fatality for 2012 and, as indicated by SGT Amory, investigations into this incident are being made.

“Our investigations into this incident began when we were summoned to the scene and we are still in the initial stages of the investigation. But once we complete it and get all our evidence and information together, we will go from there.”
