Brand new truck donated to Nevis Solid Management Authority by St. Kitts and Nevis Social Security

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE St. Kitts and Nevis Social Security donated a garbage truck valued US$142 000 to the Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority yesterday at a brief ceremony held at the landfill grounds, Long Point.

According to Calyn Lawrence, General Manager of the Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority, the island is now in possession of four trucks, and the new one has a capacity of 25 cubic yards.

The Minister of Health, Hon. Hensley Daniel, who accepted the truck on behalf of the Authority, said Social Security continues to partner with the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) to ensure that Nevisians are well catered for.

“When workers are healthier they will work and contribute to Social Security.

Social Security Directors and officials and Nevis Solid Waste officials witnessed the
    handing over of the truck

Health and Social Security is inter-twined,” he said.

He called on the drivers to use the truck carefully and noted that there is a tendency for gifts to be abused and misused.

The Minister said a lot of garbage had not been collected in the past due to shortage of trucks and he appealed to the Authority to constantly ensure that the new truck is properly maintained.

Hon. Daniel said Social Security had recently partnered with NIA on a housing development project and that Nevisians were already benefiting from a scholarship fund. “We look forward to a long and productive relationship,” he said.

He said the truck would act as a sustainable marketing tool for Social Security, as the Society’s logo had been inscribed on it.

Lawrence promised that her staff would maintain the truck. And in response to what other equipment the Authority needed to keep Nevis clean, she said a donated tyre baler is scheduled to arrive on the island within five weeks. The tyre baler costs some US$60 000 and the NIA had contributed EC$41 000 to the purchasing of it.

She called on household owners to make it easy for garbage collectors to keep the island clean by not littering and by placing their garbage in containers. She advised that containers could be purchased at Horsfords or obtained from Nevlec at a cost.

Others who witnessed the donation of the truck included: Executive Director Social Security, Sephlin Lawrence; Deputy Director Steve Wrensford; Assistant Director Elvin Bailey; and Chairman Social Security Halva Hendrickson.
