Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, June, 29th, 2012   -  Virgin Gorda residents will soon learn the importance of energy conservation as the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) hosts an Energy Conservation Expo in the Valley on Friday July 6.

The Expo, which will be held on the grounds of the Virgin Gorda Yacht Habour in the area between the Marina and the St. Thomas Bay Dock, is an extension of the first annual Energy Conservation Day.

The Virgin Gorda expo activities will be similar to the event held at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park on June 8th. “We will be displaying solar water heating systems and showing how they work compared to electrical water heating systems. We will also be displaying energy efficient lighting and distributing different types of energy efficient lights,” Deputy General Manager, Mr. Henry Creque told the Department of Information and Public Relations.

Mr. Creque also noted that regular household electrical items will also be on display. “We will be operating those devices on site, measuring how much energy they use, and actually showing consumers how much money they may be spending on each of those specific appliances monthly and annually,” he explained.

Acknowledging the importance of real life demonstrations Mr. Creque said “The Corporation recognizes that although we are spreading the message of energy conservation via various media such as the internet, television, radio and print, nothing totally replaces the value of actually seeing results first hand. We are therefore taking the Expo to Virgin Gorda to give our customers there this type of first-hand experience.”

The Energy Conservation initiative was conceived as a means to rally the community and the private sector to join with Government to promote energy conservation territory-wide in addition to changing mind frames on energy conservation matters.

The BVI Electricity Corporation is committed to providing the best possible service to its customers, and to aid in the development of the Territory's electrical infrastructure by adequately supplying a reliable and continuous electrical supply to the entire British Virgin Islands population at an affordable cost.
