Local jail overcrowded

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A report delivered at the close of the May 2008 Criminal Assizes revealed that the population at Her Majesty’s Prison stands at 271; 268 males and three females.
The report, known at the “Jail Delivery” was read before the court yesterday by Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Ashile Connor.
He informed that as of then, there were 225 male prisoners at Her Majesty’s Prison in St. Kitts, 43 at Russell’s Rest or the Prison Farm in Nevis and three females currently reside at the facility in Basseterre, St. Kitts.
Of the 268 males, 127 were convicted at the High Court, 56 at the Magistrate’s Court, 33 were awaiting trial at the High Court and 29 were awaiting trial at the Magistrate’s Court.
Two of the 268 male prisoners are waiting to be sentenced, five imprisoned at the “Queen’s Pleasure” and six are debtors.
The number of condemned prisoners is listed as six and one prisoner is noted as being “sick in hospital”.
Of the three incarcerated females, two were convicted at the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday while one is waiting for her trial to be heard at the Magistrate’s Court. ~~Adz:Left~~
