Press Release

ST. JOHN'S Antigua, July 3rd, 2012  --  In an effort to remedy congestion and other issues affecting the Heritage Quay area, the St. John’s Development Corporation (SJDC) is getting set to review a set of proposals for re-vamping the operations in the heavily trafficked area.

Specific proposals geared towards the overhauling of operations within the Heritage Quay area have been cited. The proposals are part of a preliminary document preceding a report commissioned by the SJDC. The report sets about to examine the physical structure of Heritage Quay, the layout of the complex, the problem of congestion and the areas designated for taxi operators.

In an effort to ease the flow of congestion in and around the Quay, Chairman of the SJDC Sylvester Browne says it has been suggested that the Ministry of Health be moved to facilitate an easier flow of traffic. A parking facility solely for Taxi operators is another prime proposal being looked at by the Corporation in the vicinity of Wapping Lane.

The Ministry of Tourism, SJDC and Global Destinations commissioned the Heritage Quay report last month utilizing the services of a consultancy team headed by Michael Greve  with assistance from OBM architects. Information was gathered from various cruise tourism sectors for the month of June.

Mr. Browne says stakeholders will be given a progress update when the [final] report is received in a week’s time. The Chairman also stated that the St. John’s Development Corporation expects to implement other improvements towards the end of 2012.
