BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A male resident of Keys Village is currently ‘licking’ his wounds after being beaten by four members of a Chinese family at Baker’s Corner last evening.

Alton ‘Wadada’ Silcott, an employee of the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club, alleges that he was badly beaten by fours Chinese nationals when he complained about the quality of an EC$5 Chicken Fry Rice he purchased from the Hong Hing Chinese Restaurant at Baker’s Corner, Basseterre.

“Last night, at about 7:30, I went to the Chinese restaurant at Baker’s Corner to purchase a $5 Chicken Fry Rice for my girlfriend.

The old Chinese woman, who I normally call Mummy, served me, but when I opened the container there was no salad and I asked her to put some cabbage and carrots in it.

“She went to the kitchen at the back of the restaurant and came back with what I requested. Then suddenly the chef came from the back and started pushing me. I asked him why he pushed me and if he wanted something with me.”

Silcott said he is a peaceful man and did not want to be engaged in a quarrel, so he told the old Chinese woman to take back the food and refund his money.    ~~Adz:Right~~

“This decision,” he said, “must have annoyed the chef and he boxed me and burst my mouth. Suddenly, two more Chinese came from the back, a young one and an old man, and the three of them started beating me. The old woman also joined them and together the four of them beat me to the ground and hit me several times on my head.”

Silcott stated that he managed to get out of the building and while on the parapet the three men pulled him back inside, locked the door and recommenced their onslaught.

“After they pulled me back into the restaurant and locked the door, they started to choke and beat me again. They held onto my hands and were trying to break my fingers, but I folded my fists tightly which caused them to bite me four times on my right wrist. They also tore off my shirt, burst a chain from around my neck and again threw me to the ground.

“By this time, a crowd had gathered outside, including Sugar Bowl, and they were shouting to the four Chinese to stop beating me. They did not heed the crowd’s call and I bawled out to them to call the police.”

Silcott noted that a Police officer arrived about 10 minutes after he called out to the crowd and rescued him from within the grasp of one of the Chinese men. He also stated that the old Chinese woman told the Police officer that he was responsible for causing a wound to her head.

“I told the police that I did not burst her head and some members of the crowd also verified what I said. I was too busy trying to ward off the blows that they rained down on me and…what object could I have to do that when both of my fists were closed in protection of my fingers?”

The 51-year-old man was taken to the Basseterre Police Station for questioning but while there he had an attack of Seizure. He noted that on his revival a senior officer told him to report at the station on the following day to give a statement.

Silcott explained that he suffers from Seizure and, following his attack at the station, a member of the Criminal Investigation Department took him and his girlfriend to the JNF General Hospital for treatment to his wounds.

“My girlfriend took me to the Outpatients Department shortly after 8:00 p.m., and after waiting for more than one and a half hours without anyone paying attention to me, I approached the counter and was told that I would receive medical treatment but had to wait.

“I was left sitting there and was finally attended to after midnight. I was also given a prescription for medication, which I have to purchase tomorrow, and did not leave the hospital until after one o’clock the following morning.”

Silcott said he was so badly beaten that he was unable to go to work today, which caused him to lose “double pay that is much needed at this time when cost of living is constantly on the rise”.

He also reiterated that he is a peaceful man and what the Chinese nationals did to him could have caused some individuals to retaliate with violence, but he intends to take the matter further by seeking justice.

All efforts to get a comment from the Chinese nationals were futile, and at the time of the posting of this article the restaurant had remained closed.
