Nubian Arts Productions to help refurbish BHS Auditorium

Press Release (BHS)

Basseterre st. Kitts, July 10th, 2012 – Creative Director of local theatre production company, “Nubian Arts Productions” Ms. Kesha Isaac is spearheading a fundraising drive dubbed the “One One Full Basket Project.” The program is a community based funding effort geared towards the refurbishment and overhauling of the Basseterre High School auditorium.

The brain-child of Ms. Isaac, who is also the Theatre Arts teacher at the Basseterre High School, saw a desperate need to develop such a program to bolster interest in the CXC Theatre Arts program and give the building a much needed facelift.

Ms. Isaac stated that she felt that the best way to tackle the problems of teaching a practical heavy CXC syllabus without the proper space and equipment would be cheating the students of the full understanding the subject requires.

She decided that the auditorium, which hasn’t seen much by the way of use or maintenance since the Carifesta Festival of Arts in 2000, needed a massive overhaul.

The pupils would benefit from learning within an actualized theatrical space, thus giving them the proper tools for that element of their education. The school itself will benefit from any events held there as the auditorium, when fully funded, will be maintained and self supporting.

The auditorium will need about EC $70,000 in order to repair and replace essential systems, namely; air conditioning, window replacement, carpeting, backstage spaces and other aesthetics. Any other funds will be funneled into new lighting and sound systems to bring the auditorium up to regional and international standards.

When speaking on the need for an auditorium Ms. Isaac said, “People need performing arts. They relax, inspire and change us. Without the arts, we wither intellectually and creatively. Having a proper place to display performing arts, whether spoken, sung, acted or danced is of utmost importance.”

Ms. Isaac added that a series of plays, recitals and concerts will be held at the auditorium as the main engine of fund raising for the project.

The first of these events is a play, produced by Nubian Arts Productions entitled “Closing the Devil’s Workshop.”

Although this is a personal undertaking by Ms. Isaac, Nubian Arts Productions will dedicate a portion of the proceeds for this and each subsequent show until the goal has been realized. Showtime is 8pm on 13th and 14th July at 8pm and 15th at 6pm. Tickets are $20
