Rotary Club of Liamuiga Installs New Officers

Press Release (Rotary)

Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 16th, 2012 – The Rotary Club of Liamuiga (RCL) and the Rotary Club of St. Kitts each welcomed a new team of leadership during the annual installation ceremony and banquet at the Sweet Lime Restaurant/Club MaPau on Port Zante earlier this month.

The ceremony included outgoing speeches by the 2011 presidents of each Club. The departing presidents gave a summary of their terms in office and the accomplishments of their respective Clubs. Among the RCL programs that were highlighted were the Christmas Food Hamper, Four Way Test and Spelling Bee programmes.

Peter Jenkins, outgoing president of RCL, gave special recognition to the ongoing collaboration among RCL, the Rotary Club of Lichfield St-Chad and the Rotary Club of Ledburry with the Diabetic Footcare Project.

“The aim of the Project is to reduce the number of amputations due to complications from diabetes. What is also significant about this collaboration is that it has placed St. Kitts-Nevis at the forefront of this intervention worldwide,” Jenkins said.

As the baton of leadership was passed, the incoming presidents outlined their vision for their respective Clubs for the upcoming Rotary year. Newly installed RCL President Lester Hanley encouraged members to fully embrace the theme adopted by Rotary International for the 2012-2013 year. The theme is “Peace through Service.”

“As Rotarians and as Rotary Clubs I encourage everyone to embrace the Rotary International theme of ‘Service through Peace’ and realize the need for understanding, tolerance and inclusion for all. For this, in my view, is our first step in recognizing our goal of Peace through Service – Peace within ourselves and Peace within our clubs,” said President Hanley.

In addition to the leadership transition, The Rotary Club of Liamuiga, also recognized the unheralded contributions of members of the community. Among the individuals who were celebrated were Sargeant Rosemary Roberts of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force for her selfless and heroic efforts to thwart crime in the Stapleton area and nation as a whole and the six-member nursing staff of the Intensive Care Unit of the Joseph N. France General Hospital.

The nurses were particularly lauded for their dedication and unparalleled commitment to their duties by serving as beacons of hope for the entire nation. Each awardee received an engraved plaque and an EC $1000 cash award.

Entertainment during the evening was provided by attorney Adrian Scantlebury who provided several soulful pieces on his saxophone and DJ EK ‘The Real Right’ who had Rotarians dancing the night away following the ceremony.

Installed as members of the RCL executive were:
    President: Lester Hanley
    Vice President: Eustace Warner
    Secretary: Julie Gumbs
    Treasurer: Kaii Dias
    Sargeant-At-Arms: Tuffida Stewart

At the evening’s close, President Hanley said, “We stand at the dawning of a promising year for the Rotary Club of Liamuiga,” he stated. “If the success of this ceremony is any indication of what is come, then, what a year it will be!”
