BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - IN recent times, a number of allegations was made by students attending secondary schools in St. Kitts, especially the Basseterre Senior High School (BHS), against teachers of the learning institutions.

Speaking with SKNVibes, some of these students complained of the treatment meted out to them by some teachers, who they claim show little or no interest in their academic upliftment.

One student noted that teachers would give them assignments to complete within a given time, but very often they would not explain or give advice on the topic. On the other hand, when the student fails to meet the deadline, the teachers would punish them.

Another student said on many occasions the teachers would loiter in the staff room and “chat the students and then sometimes go to class and throw words in the students’ face”. The student claimed that on one occasion she overheard a teacher telling another, “A going class go teach these hard heads.”   ~~Adz:Right~~

The student added that on another occasion they asked a teacher why she was so late for class and the teacher replied, “You better be happy I reach because I could stay in the staffroom and still get pay.”

A number of other students have suggested that the government and other education officials should visit the schools from time to time without giving notice in order to see what the teachers as well as the student are up to.

A male student told SKNVibes that he has mixed emotions on some teachers’ behaviour.

He stated that there are a number of teachers who would do a good job, and “I applaud them for it, but, at the same time, that there are others who just come to school and see teaching as a job. Teaching is more than that...it is a profession and teachers must take pride in whatever they do, because they are supposed to be our role models and mentors”.
