BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITH admirable momentum, Operation Rescue member Carlton Dupont began a movement of silent prayer and protest and vowed to continue until the political leader of land, the Honourable Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, is removed from office. But the movement seems to have been hurled into oblivion.
Dupont – who admits to being a former supporter of Dr. Douglas – has been very vocal about his views that the country would be better served if Dr. Douglas were not its leader.
Corresponding with those views, Dupont – flanked by members of Operation Rescue and others – stood opposite Government Headquarters on March 23, 2012 with Bible in hand and explained to the media that his mission was to pray Dr. Douglas out of office and engage in a silent protest geared towards the same end.
His indications to this media house were that he would continue this action every Friday following that – barring holidays - until success was achieved.
He followed through on the ensuing Friday but made no appearance on April 5 as it was a holiday (Good Friday).
Since then – however – Dupont has not been seen in that area and seems to have given up on his goal.
In an effort to ascertain whether or not he has reneged on his stance, or if he has thrown in the towel, SKNVibes made contact with Dupont on Monday (July 16) and he indicated that while he is willing to give a response, he could not do so then as he was observing a cricket match and should be contacted later that afternoon.
Numerous efforts were made to contact Dupont by cellular phone and, on most occasions, the calls were unanswered while on others he answered but seemed not to be able hear the party on the other end.
Yesterday (July 19), after failing to secure an interview with Dupont via telephone, a representative of this publication visited his jewellery and watch repair business at The Pelican Mall.
While there, the representative requested an interview from Dupont and he responded in the affirmative, but his actions did not suggest that he was prepared or willing to do so.
After waiting in the store for 45 minutes, the representative inquired of Dupont again about the interview and, after nodding in the affirmative, he declared that he did not know the representative was still in the store.
This was after the representative was joined by another employee of SKNVibes and they were both engaged in conversation in the store.
He also indicated that he was preparing some jewellery in time to “catch the plane”, but when the representative asked if that meant the interview could not be conducted then, Dupont refused to respond. And even after being further prompted, he still did not respond.
Some have questioned DuPont’s apparent “attitude of silence” and others have speculated as to its cause. But given his silence on the matter and the uncouth mannerism displayed in his store, it leaves one to conclude that the once vocal and outspoken crusader has been discouraged in his quest or is afraid of reprisals.
