ST.GEORGE, Grenada, JULY 19th, 2012 -- Grenada’s Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for St. Patrick East, Hon. Tillman Thomas, on Wednesday, officially turned on the lights on the Hermitage Playing Field.
As part of a collaborative effort involving the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Sports and the Grenada Electricity Services (GRENLEC) A large number of villagers turned out to participate in the activity and enjoy a friendly football game between two community sides.
Prime Minister Thomas spoke of his Government’s emphasis on sports development as a means of providing opportunities for young people, as evidenced by international cricketer Devon Smith, who represented his country and the region on the West Indies cricket team and World 400M champion, Kirani James.
“Sports gives our young people opportunities for building character and discipline and those who take it seriously it, are afforded the chance for higher education through scholarships and other forms of training,” the Prime Minister told the appreciative audience.
He urged the community to utilize the facility creatively and expressed his appreciation to GRENLEC “for this partnership”.
The Prime Minister, in his address said Government is committed to improving the lives of all Grenadians wherever they reside. He pointed to the recent establishment of the Community Access Points (CAPs) which provide internet connectivity to the predetermined rural communities.
Along with the improvements to the Hermitage Recreation Ground the Prime Minister pointed to the developments on the nearby Mt. Reuil Estate where production has doubled in the last year, enabling greater employment of the people in the surrounding villages.
The Grenadian leader said the launch of the T.A Marryshow Community College Video Conferencing facility which allows students from his constituency and parish to access tertiary education via an interactive platform from a centre in St. Patrick.
This development allows parents and students who reside in the parish and must travel each day to school in St. George’s, to save on travel and living expenses, estimated at more than EC $600 per student per month.
This was the fulfillment of a promise by Prime Minister to his constituents prior to coming to office.
