Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 20th, 2012 (SKNIS): More than 100 young people in St. Kitts and Nevis are sharing inspiring stories of overcoming personal difficulties, service to community and fulfilling dreams with staff from the Department of Youth Empowerment as the process to identify the next group of outstanding teens continue.
Peace Corps volunteer, Connie Howard, told SKNIS that candidate interviews for The 25 Most Remarkable Teens in St. Kitts and Nevis are progressing well, with back to back sessions currently taking place at the department’s office on Church Street.
“We went to Nevis at the end of June and completed the interviews of persons there and now we are halfway through the ones here in St. Kitts,” Ms. Howard explained. “We will be doing interviews until the end of August and then we will start reviewing in September, going over the notes, making the evaluations and selecting the new 25 teens.”
Nominations were received from school officials, community groups and private individuals.
Awards will be presented in various non-traditional categories including Courage to Overcome, Scholar Athlete, Performing Arts, Youth Activism, Most Promising Teen, Campus Leadership, Spirit of Hope and Personal Excellence. Academics were not considered this year as it is traditionally recognized by other programmes. The increased submissions in other areas have been quite revealing.
“I’ve heard some interesting stories and interviewed some very remarkable young kids. All of them certainly have qualities that they should be proud of,” Ms. Howard concluded.
This year marks the second time the annual awards will be presented. Last year’s recognition ceremony was held in the Federal Parliament and the initiative was widely considered a success.
