King Konris ready to compete in Leeward Island Calypso Competition

By: Suelika N. Creque, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE reigning National Calypso King of St. Kitts and Nevis, Konris Maynard said that he is ready to represent St. Kitts in this year’s Leeward Island Calypso Competition which will be held on August 11.

He said that with all competitions he enters with a view to have fun and to entertain most of all.

“I am never overly concerned about the end result. It's always a nice thing to win and if that happens I will certainly be happy,” he said.

Maynard won the competition back to back, (2009 and 2010) but was dethroned last year 2011 by King Splinter of Anguilla.

“With respect to last year’s competition, I have no hard feelings about losing out on the crown. It just means that this time around I have to work harder,” he said.

The 2011/2012 St. Kitts-Nevis Calypso King said that he is hoping to do the trick with ‘20/20’ and he has not finalised his second song as yet.

“I have a few choices for another song including the possibility of a new release. That decision will be made shortly.”

Maynard is presently residing in Tortola and said that he plans to defend his crown in December.

In his calypso career he has won a total of 14 titles; two junior calypso crowns, five national calypso monarch crowns, one silver jubilee crown, two leeward island crowns, three party/soca monarch crowns and one road march win.

This year, the Leeward Island Calypso Monarch will be celebrating its 16th anniversary with nine countries competing; St. Maarten, St. Martin, Antigua, Nevis, British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, Anguilla, US Virgin Islands and St. Kitts.

To make this year’s event a memorable one, Austin Lyons better known as ‘Super Blue’ and ‘Blueboy’ of Trinidad and Tobago will be a part of the event.

Lyons is a calypsonian, soca musician and lyricist and can be considered as one of the fathers of modern day soca. He has won the Road March Competiton in Trinidad more times than anyone else and has won the International Soca Monarch for a record five times.

According to a release on the competition, in order to avoid controversy which surrounded the judging of the last competition, the services of three judges will be secured from the Winward Islands, two will come from St. Vincent and one from Dominica and two from Anguilla.
