Day 2 – OLYMPICS: Trials and Triumphs

By: Lorna Callender, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE SHOCK St. Kitts and Nevis experienced on Day 1 when star sprinter Tameka Williams was dismissed from the National Olympic Team has the potential of spiralling into a trial.

Word is out that her coach, Mr. Eric Francis who is also Track and Field Coach of the Houston-based Elite Performance Club, is serving notice of plans to sue the National Olympic Committee for its ejection of Sprinter Tameka Williams from the London Olympics.

But as St. Kitts and Nevis have come to realise after undergoing frequent political trials, the Court is there to uphold the law and unfortunately this is not always synonymous with justice. Long before the trial stage is reached, it is hoped that more evidence will be forthcoming to bring clarity to the situation.

Other trials, albeit of a different sort, were experienced at the London Olympic Games on Day 2.

The Caribbean Judo participants did not do so well with Aruba and Belize losing to their competitors and having to drop out of the Games.

Spain’s football team that was so triumphant in recent European competitions, was hoping to add Olympic gold to the country’s senior world and European titles, but was eliminated after an upset 1-0 loss to Honduras. They, too, have had to head home.

But the biggest surprise at the Aquatics Centre came from France’s 4x100-meter freestyle relay team, which upset the favoured United States and Australia.

    Triumphs

But already records have begun to tumble.

In Swimming , American Dana Vollmer broke an Olympic record in the 100-meter butterfly Sunday night, then Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa broke another in the 100 m breaststroke.

The latest medal count for on Day 2 favoured the following countries:
Medal Count through Saturday, July 28, 2012:

    1. China: 6 G, 4 S, 2 B - Total = 12
    2. United States: 3 G, 5 S, 3 B - Total = 11
    3. Italy: 2 G, 3 S, 2 B - Total = 7
    4. South Korea: 2 G, 1 S, 2 B - Total = 5
    5. Japan: 2 S, 3 B - Total = 5
    6. France: 2 G, 1 S, 1 B - Total = 4
    7. Russia: 1 G, 3 B - Total = 4
    8. North Korea: 2 G, 1 B - Total = 3
    9. Hungary: 1 G, 1 S, 1 B - Total = 3
    10. Australia: 1 G, 1 S, 1 B - Total = 3
    11. Brazil: 1 G, 1 S, 1 B - Total = 3
    12. Kazakhstan: 2 G - Total = 2

    DID YOU KNOW?

That the only female competitor not to have to submit to a sex test at the 1976 Summer Olympics was Princess Anne of the UK, who was competing as a member of the UK equestrian team. As the daughter Queen Elizabeth II, such a test was seen as inappropriate!
