    DROWNED: Five-year-old Malique Thomas
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – POLICE are investigating the death of an infant who reportedly drowned today while playing in a swimming pool at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort in Frigate Bay.

Five-year-old Malique Thomas of Tabernacle Village was pronounced dead this afternoon by Dr. Leroy Richardson, a medical practitioner assigned to the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, after his motionless body was taken out from under the water of a pool at the Resort.

According to Police Press and Public Relations Officer Inspector Cromwell Henry, at about 4:15 this afternoon while Thomas was in the swimming pool with a number of children and adults, someone saw him under the water and he was not moving.

Inspector Henry said an individual immediately went to the infant’s rescue and took him out of the water. He further said Thomas did not show signs of breathing and manual artificial respiration was applied, but the effort was incapable of producing any result.

He also stated that a Unit of the Medical Emergency Services arrived on the scene and its members also failed in their attempt at artificial respiration.

~~Adz:Right~~ “The child was pronounced dead by the Marriott Hotel's doctor, Dr. Leroy Richardson,” the Police PRO said.

SKNVibes learnt that the infant’s mother, Lavern Weekes, also of Tabernacle Village, is an employee of the St. Kitts Marriott Resort and was not working at the time of the incident, but had taken her son to the establishment to have some fun.

This media house also spoke with the General Manager of the Resort, Flor van der Vaart, who indicated that he did not have all the details and could not make any pronouncement on the incident at the time. He however promised to provide some information after family members of the child were informed and the police had completed their investigations.

Vaart explained that he had “just came off the plane” and was greeted with the shocking news of the death of his employee’s son.

The General Manager said the management and staff of the Resort operate as a family unit and he has to ensure that dead child’s family is assisted in its time of bereavement.

    Police investigations are ongoing.
