Heavy water flow causes damage to College Street Ghaut

    Road temporarily closed

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE heavy flow of water and serious erosion along College Street Ghaut have effected a temporary closure of that artery pending an assessment to be conducted by the Public Works Department.

Torrential downpour which was caused by a passing tropical wave led to minor flooding in a number of areas across St. Kitts including one of Basseterre’s main thoroughfares, College Street Ghaut.

Reports received by this publication suggest that also as a result of the heavy flow of water along that road,  portions on both the eastern and western sides fell and have made those sections of the road virtually impassible by motor vehicles.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Works Lenrick Lake told SKNVibes that the Ministry is aware of the damage caused to the road and “as soon as the road clears up, an assessment would be conducted to ascertain the safety and usability of the road”.

Head of the Traffic Department Inspector Cromwell Henry also commented on the condition of the road and declared a temporary closure to vehicular traffic.

“By virtue of the heavy flow of water through College Street Ghaut, we have taken the decision to close the street to vehicular traffic. It is virtually impossible for vehicles to go down there. How long it would remain closed would depend on the assessment of the road engineers and the extent of the damage caused by the heavy flow.

“In the meantime we advise motorists to avoid using the upper portion of College Street until we are able to get an assessment from the Public Works of the extent of the damage which was caused by the water.”

Days before the tropical wave began affecting the area, the Public Works Department started work on the same road which SKNVibes understands was to widen the existing drainage there.
