CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – A young man on Nevis was sentenced to life imprisonment for the killing of his uncle.

According to police reports, Sandy Nisbett of Charles Road, New Castle, Nevis was found guilty of manslaughter on Thursday, April 12, 2012 and had recently appeared in the Nevis Circuit Court before Justice John Benjamin who sentenced him to life imprisonment with an opportunity for parole after 20 years.

Initially, Nisbett was slapped with a murder charge for the killing of his uncle, Alejandro Nisbett, but was found guilty and convicted on the lesser count – manslaughter.

Alejandro, who was a native of the Dominican Republic and was residing at Shaw’s Road, Newcastle, lost his life on Thursday, October 30, 2008 when, according to police reports, he was “attacked and wounded with a machete at Shaw’s Road at about 5:30 a.m.”.

On arrival at the scene, officers of the Nevis Division had found “the deceased lying in the road with what appeared to be blood coming from various parts of his body”.

Alejandro was pronounced dead by the District Medical Officer who was called to the scene of the crime, and shortly thereafter Nisbett was arrested and charged with murder.

An autopsy was performed on the deceased’s remains on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 by Resident Pathologist Dr. Jesus Debrok, who revealed that death was due to “asphyxia caused by multiple traumas of wounds to the right side of his head and neck”.
