    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, August 9th, 2012  -  Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE joins in congratulating Her Ladyship, the Honourable Justice Janice Mesadis Pereira who will soon become the first female chief justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court when Her Majesty the Queen signs the letters patent.

     

    According to Premier, "I was excited when I received this news. I am pleased that another Virgin Islander is making history for these beautiful Virgin Islands." 
     
    Justice Pereira, formerly Janice George-Creque, is from Virgin Gorda. She has been appointed to act as chief Justice and president of the Court of Appeal effective August 1, 2012.
     
    "I congratulate Mrs. Pereira for her continued and steadfast commitment to the field of law, locally and regionally. I have known her to be very professional, forthright, progressive and dedicated not only to her personal and professional development, but to her contribution in building law abiding communities," Premier Smith explained.
     
    He said, "She followed her dream and has now reached the highest pinnacle in her profession. I encourage other Virgin Islanders to follow her lead: dream big and bring those dreams to reality through hard work, commitment, and perseverance. That is how success happens."
     
    Premier Smith added that the Government and people of the Virgin Islands are exceptionally proud of this achievement and wishes her a successful term as she serves in this new capacity.
     
    In the Virgin Islands, she has served as acting Registrar General, acting Registrar of the Supreme Court and Registrar of Companies, and acted and served as Magistrate. She was an Associate Attorney at Law with J.S. Archibald and Co.; Associate Attorney with Harney Westwood & Riegels; Attorney at Law with McW Todman & Co, and a law partner in Farara George-Creque & Kerrins. Regionally, she served as a High Court Judge of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court from 2003 to 2008 and Court of Appeal from 2009 to 2012.
