Press Release (LIAT)

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, August 10th, 2012 – LIAT, THE Caribbean Airline joins in celebrating the success of Grenadian teenager, Kirani James whose August 6 win in the 400m individual at the 2012 Olympics in London has warmed the hearts of residents of his hometown of Gouyave, the wider Grenadian community, the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and indeed the wider region.

James, 19, won the race in 43.94 seconds, making him the first man from outside the United States to break the 44-second barrier.

“This is a momentous achievement and Grenada and the OECS have a lot to celebrate. Mr. James has won the sub-region’s first Olympic gold medal and we at LIAT will be honouring him with a fitting tribute for his accomplishment very shortly,” LIAT’s Chief Executive Officer Captain Ian Brunton said.

“We have taken note of Mr. James’ grace on the track; his symbolic gesture in switching bibs with Oscar Pistorius (the Blade Runner) after winning the semi-final; and how he shook hands with every competitor after winning the final.”

LIAT views the win as an extraordinary achievement for a small country like Grenada and for Mr. James and would like to urge young people throughout the region to follow his example and always strive for success.

“Kirani James has brought Grenada together in a way similar to how LIAT has been bringing the people of the region together for the past 56 years. The management and staff of LIAT (1974) Limited extend congratulations to him on this outstanding victory,” Captain Brunton added.
