Distortion in theSaint Lucian economy

CASTRIES St. Lucia, August 13th, 2012   --  Many opportunities and challenges face small developing countries; however all too often it is leadership that is lacking,  - only to be entrapped with regressive alternatives that require a public display of tangible efforts and a real commitment to fiscal due diligence from external benefactors.

But before government place citizens at this point and preferable not at all; - a concerted effort is required to substantially restore real confidence and opportunity to business and sustainable investment for the future.

In this global age business look for predictability; they want to know with practical evidence that the economy is heading towards long-term stability and improvements that coexist with business long-term planning.

And not a barrage of government short bliss that will be financed via extensive borrowing and charitable donations. These are distortions in any economy.

Business and citizens look for budgeting cost comparisons and government efforts to control expenditure and improve efficiency. This in return demonstrates strong resolve that evoke credible strength in financial markets and help set responsive harmony.

Further, there are individual and collective success stories in the global economy however, the theory of urban development via housing construction - is nothing new.

Actually, this necessitates a more fundamental policy and the need to seriously address the root cause, and, the lack of a well defined provision for the establishment of not just housing; but quality home construction and communities, with basic infrastructure, services and legal property titles for home owners.

Policy must also offer increased provision for low income households and affordable mix dwellings to access public-private and mortgage financing. As well as too improve services and systems to better administer creditors, borrowers and property regulations.

This would enable job creation and private enterprise to meet the needs in low-income, mixed rental properties and dwellings, while proving greater flexibility to economic conditions.

Notably, in any environment the ability to foster partnerships, professional competition, new and improved techniques help foster greater efficiency and factor cost reduction.

And since partisanship development with government control is not suitable for investments, private capital will not re-enter the economy and that, will undermine the economy.

The usual options to attract private sector investments include incentives. But a more targeted and elevated approach with a well defined urban development home ownership, land development, financing and improved regulations that remove uncertainty in the market place warrants an in-depth formulation – via an economic development council (EDC).

Therefore, the common sense is simple; if there is little to no returns to be made on investment - there will be no investments, no recovery, no jobs and no growth.

People need jobs instead of unemployment, and real choices to solve distortion and misconception.

People are tired of clever games; it’s time to create the prerequisites that will free up capital into the economy and facilitate wealth creation with real economic policy and strategic thinking.

Now, more than ever, Saint Lucia requires strong commitment and intrinsic leadership with a strong hand, clear-eyed with focus and clarity of purpose to achieve both policy and strategic goals.

Business is hurting. The economy is on emergency brakes. It is time to restore strength and vigor with solid ideas and workable proposals.

It’s time to get to work and stop the distorted gloating.
