Basseterre St Kitts, August 12th, 2012: Again, Jamaica’s culture and history will be front and centre at a Community Contribution Event, when the Jamaican Kittitian (JamKit) Association stages a Public Lecture on Monday, 13 August 2012, commencing at 7:00pm. To be held at the University of the West Indies Open Campus, Lecture Hall, in the Gardens, Basseterre, the event will feature a distinguished array of presenters and panellists.
The main presenter will be, Dr. Barrington Brown, a Jamaican academic who has lived in the Federation for many years and has been fundamental in the development of ties between the Federation and Jamaica. The moderator will be Mr. Tapley Seaton CVO, QC, the eminent barrister and solicitor who is a local authority on culture in the Federation and the wider Caribbean. The other panellist will be Mr. Tambolo Kitwana, a native of St. Kitts with an in-depth understanding of the connection between the two nations.
With the topic "A Template for Developing the Arts in Caribbean Small Island Developing States: A Jamaican Blueprint of the past 50 Years", the Public Lecture hopes to delve into the rich cultural legacy that Jamaica has bequeathed to the Caribbean and the benefits that it has derived from jurisdictions such as the Federation. It also hopes to explore the cultural dominance of Jamaica in the region and the positive contributions that this dominance has made to the region and the world.
The JamKit Association extends an invitation to the public to be in attendance at this Public Lecture and to share their views on the topic. It is hoped that the exchange will lead to new perspectives on how both nations can more effectively leverage culture for national development.
Immediately following the Lecture Presentation and Panel Discussion, presentations will be made to the youths from St. Kitts who won prizes in the recently concluded Jamaica 50 SKN Essay Competition for Primary School Students, High School Students and Young Adults. The persons from Nevis who won prizes will have their prizes presented in Nevis on Sunday, 19 August 2012.
