EFA High School Scholarship for single moms deadline extended

By: Jenise Ferlance, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Education for Advancement has extended the deadline for applications for scholarships being offered to single mothers who wish to gain a high school diploma.

Applications for the scholarship became available on June 13 and the deadline was originally expected to end on July 31, but has been extended to September 21, and according to Local Representative, Leah Sahely, this was done in an effort to give more single mothers a chance to apply.

She said that the idea for the scholarship came about on the eve of Mother's Day and is available to women who are motivated to acquire a first degree but do not have enough CXC/GCEs, which is usually an entry requirement, or do not have the financial means to do so.

“We thought it would be one way to recognize mothers and saw this scholarship as one tangible way to provide support to single moms who wanted to advance themselves but didn’t have the entry requirements or financial means."

One successful applicant will be awarded a full scholarship valued at US$1000.

Ashworth College has partnered EFA to provide the online high school diploma. Sahely said, "we were pleased to have Ashworth College come on board to offer this scholarship.”

To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must:

    - be a citizen of St Kitts and Nevis

    - be a single mom who has less than 5 CXC/GCEs.

    - be between 18 and 40 years

    - have never received financial assistance for education before

    - submit a 500-word essay “Why do I want to obtain a high school diploma”

    - be willing to participate in an interview if selected as a finalist

    - have access to a computer and internet services

    - be willing to complete the fully online version of the General High School diploma (all textbooks are online)

    - be willing to provide quarterly progress reports on status of studies

    - include one letter of recommendation from a mentor, teacher, civic leader or church leader who knows the applicant personally

The curriculum is regionally accredited and would allow graduates to move on to completing associate or bachelor's degrees.

Interested individuals should contact Leah Sahely, Local Representative of EFA, at stkittsnevis@efalearning.com.
