Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, August 14th, 2012  – The British Virgin Islands (BVI) London Office ended its Olympic House activities with a post Olympics reception at BVI House, led by the BVI Olympic Team.

The event was attended by London Olympic Committee officials and volunteers, Hertfordshire County officials, London Office staff and residents of the village of Aston.

In remarks to the gathering, BVI Olympic Committee (BVIOC) Secretary General Mr. Dean Greenaway thanked everyone for supporting the BVI’s athletes in the lead-up to the London 2012 Olympics.

He paid special tribute to Aston residents including Mr. Dave Parker and his wife, BVI Olympic Ambassador, Shirley Parker for taking the lead in galvanising support for BVI athletes in the village of Aston.

Mr. Greenaway also thanked Mrs. Rose-Marie Mula for her role in helping to make the BVI-Hertfordshire County partnership a reality and recognised Hertfordshire County Council for its support and provision of training facilities for athletes.

Director of the BVI London Office Mr. Kedrick Malone and the staff of the BVI London Office were also thanked for their all-around support.

Olympic Sprinter Mrs. Tahesha Harrigan-Scott delivered remarks on behalf of herself and Mr. J’maal Alexander in which she thanked the host families of Aston for opening up their homes and making their stay in the United Kingdom (UK) in the lead-up to the Olympics comfortable.

Mrs. Harrigan-Scott was the Territory’s sole qualifying athlete in the London 2012 Olympics and was joined by Mr. Alexander, 100 meter sprinter. Her 100 meter heat on August 2 was viewed live on plasma screen at the BVI’s Olympic House by an audience of cheering BVIslanders and friends and supporters of the Territory.

Both athletes have said they will continue competing and prepare for the 14th International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships in Moscow, Russia in 2013.

In an interview with the Department of Information and Public Relations, Mr. Malone said, “it was an honour for BVI House to have served as the territory’s Olympic House for these Games. It’s an opportunity we may never again have in our lifetime.”

The BVI Olympic Team returns to the Territory today after several weeks of training and competition at the London 2012 Olympics.
