    Charlestown Nevis (February 17, 2004) As the Tourism Week of activities continues, the Lyn Jeffers Secondary School took the honour of capturing all the prizes in the 2004 Essay Writing Competition sponsored by the Bank of Nevis.

    At a brief prize giving ceremony held on Tuesday at the Cultural Centre in Charlestown, it was revealed that Ms Joy Napier and Ms Kyndra Monique Liburd took the first and second prizes respectively in the senior category, while Ms Jessica Johnson and Ms Lauren Knorr took the first and second prizes respectively, in the junior category.

    The competition, which targeted the secondary schools, saw students writing on the following topics: In the junior category, forms 1 to 3 wrote on the topic, “Numerous factors have contributed to instabilities within the tourism sector in Nevis. What can Nevisians do to lessen the effects of such factors?”

    In the senior category, forms 4 to 5 wrote on the topic, “What strategies should be taken to market Nevis as a prime tourist destination.” The competition was keenly contested as the Charlestown Secondary and the Gingerland Secondary schools were the other participants.

    Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Mr. Tyrone O’Flaherty gave brief remarks as he congratulated the winners on behalf of the Ministry of tourism and gave words of encouragement to all the participants. He said, “as in everything else, in every field of endeavour, there are no losers, everybody is a winner, you are a winner for simply for having taken part.”

    The Essay Coordinator, Ms Zahnela Claxton gave a brief overview of the contest, which is in its 2nd year, while the representative of the Bank of Nevis, Mrs. Shirletta Byron, distributed the monetary prizes. Ms Joy Napier gave the vote of thanks.
