    Chamber Pleased with Consultations

~~Adz:Right~~Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 21, 2008 (SKNIS): Last week’s National Consultation on the Economy was hailed as a success by the private sector as it provided many recommendations for Government to consider in preparation for the 2009 Fiscal Budget.

President of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Mark Wilkin told SKNIS that his organization was pleased with the discussions.

“The … consultations went very well,” he said, during an interview for the Perspectives radio magazine programme. “The Chamber was happy that it was [convened] earlier than normal and it was very timely so that … we can meet each other again before the budget is prepared and finalised.”

Using adjectives such a “frank” and “open” Mr. Wilkin explained that it makes sense for government to dialogue with its economic and social partners and get the ideas and impressions of stakeholders, particularly the private sector as it is a “major player in the economy.” He expressed satisfaction with the opportunity to interact with the Cabinet and other policy makers.

The National Consultation on the Economy was designed to create an atmosphere of transparency and disclosure within Government’s fiscal operation and to give the public through its social partners and representatives, an opportunity to learn about policy initiatives.

Minister of State for Information Honourable Nigel Carty noted that Government looks forward to furthering the discussions coming out of the consultation and is anxious to continue a close working relationship with all stakeholders.

Issues arising from the consultation and the economic outlook for St. Kitts and Nevis will be discussed on next week’s edition of Perspectives. Former Financial Secretary Ambassador Wendell Lawrence will be the special guest.
