ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, August 14th, 2012  – Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn has congratulated the Territory’s secondary students for their success in the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination.

CXC is the organising body that administers the regional examination, while the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) is the exam registered for and sat by students to attain certification.

Yesterday, in a radio broadcast, Minister Walwyn said a total of 239 students from within the public system qualified to sit the CSEC examination of which 177 students registered.

Seven of those candidates were form four students of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre, but due to the transfer of one student, only six sat the examinations.

Students sat the exams in 25 subjects, including core subjects of Mathematics, English Language, Integrated Science and Social Studies.

Also, Minister Walwyn said that all fifth form students at the BVI Seventh-day Adventist Secondary and the St. George’s Secondary registered to sit at least one CSEC examination.

Seven fourth form students from the private schools also registered for the CSEC examinations.

Additionally, 27 private candidates registered to sit the CXC CSEC® examinations. Private candidates are those individuals who are not attached to any of the secondary schools in the Virgin Islands.

Minister Walwyn provided the following breakdown of the statistics:

    • For English Language 179 students sat the exams. Of these 179 students, 140 of were successful. There were 35 Grade one's, 50 Grade two's and 55 Grade three’s.

    • For Mathematics 149 candidates sat the examination. Of these 149 students, 100 candidates were successful. There were 22 Grade one’s, 48 Grade two’s, 30 Grade three’s.

    • For Integrated Science 49 candidates sat the examination. Of these 49 candidates, 48 candidates were successful. There were five Grade one’s, 28 Grade two’s and 15 Grade three’s.

    • For Social Studies 42 candidates sat the examination. Of these 42, 38 students were successful. There were four Grade one’s, 16 Grade two’s and 18 Grade three’s.

The Education Minister noted the influx of fourth form students sitting the exams. “It is encouraging to note that we also have fourth formers writing CXC CSEC® examinations. If there are fourth form students who are capable or writing these examinations and passing them, then why shouldn’t all our fifth formers write and achieve success in these examinations?”

He continued, “If all our students are sitting the School Leaving Examinations and doing well, then why shouldn’t they be able to do the CXC examinations and do just as well? It stands to reason, that more of our students should be entering for the CXC examinations and do well.”

Highlighting the importance of the regional certification, Minister Walwyn said, “It is important in today’s world for us to have our students sit regional and international examinations to not only prepare them for the global world but to also provide a benchmark for their own success.”

He continued, “While many have argued that we do not need the CXC examinations because we have our own School Leaving Examinations, it is clear that this alone is not enough to take our students forward to the best Colleges and Universities. I encourage you to look at another angle as we embrace the CXC CSEC® examinations.”

The Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) is one of five qualifications administered by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) to provide certification that is recognised locally, regionally and internationally.
