CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - HIV/AIDS Prevention and Education Officer Nadine Caines yesterday told SKNVibes that research has shown anal sex is the highest mode of transmission of HIV.
Caines said forced sex puts victims at the risk of being infected with HIV, as the victims and their attackers may not use condoms during the act.
Caines was at the time responding to recent incidents of sexual assault on minors reported in sections of the press in the Federation.
She said semen mixed with blood has the highest concentration of the virus and it increases chances of infection. “Considering the rectum is tight, the possibility of bleeding is high and this increases chances of transmission of the HIV virus,” she said yesterday during an interview at the Nevis HIV/AIDS Coordinating office.
“Persons who engage in anal sex should use very strong condoms such as Rough Rider,” she said.
Caines said in the era of HIV/AIDS, everybody needs to have the right tools prior to having sex. “You need mental, social and spiritual tools. If you have sex outside wedlock or you have sex with an unfaithful partner, or you are unfaithful to your partner, this puts you at risk.
“Sex between adults and children, whether there is consent or not, is wrong. Children are not in a position to make informed decisions themselves.”
Caines called on parents and guardians to be open to their children about the risks that are out there. ~~Adz:Right~~
