BASSETERRE, St. Kitts-CHILDREN who attended the Central Basseterre Future Leaders Summer Camp today (Aug 22) marched up and down the streets of Basseterre in one final hoorah before concluding their week of fun.
After ending their march at the McKnight Community Centre, the students were served lunch and ice cream before being addressed by a McKnight hometown hero—Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Sam Condor.
“I am glad to see all of you children here because this camp is important not only for entertainment, but for education. Roots, grounding and history are very important things to remember,” he noted before telling the children that he too attended Irish Town Primary before attaining his current position of stature.
The DPM reminded the children that “you are a part of your family, and families make up communities and communities make up
the nation,” and that the children have an important role to play in what he called the “path of preparation”.
“You children will have to grow up and help this nation to move on. You must be the foundation for the development of our nation and this camp is an important first step to help train you in being productive members of society.
“In this, our 25th year of Independence, the goal is to keep moving forward,” he said.
Following Condor’s remarks, the children were thanked by Constituency #2 candidate and camp sponsor, Marcella Liburd before receiving certificates of participation.
Speaking with SKNVibes, Liburd said the camp was “more successful than I could have anticipated”. She extended her thanks to the parents of the campers who dropped off and picked up their children each day.
“Without the assistance of numerous teachers and volunteers who carried out the day-to-day operations of the camp, none of it would have been possible.”
Those parents attending the closing ceremony were able to see different arts and crafts projects that children aged 5-12 made during the week of activities, including hanging cats, hand beads, newspaper coasters and puppets. ~~Adz:Right~~
With the September 1 start of school quickly approaching, the children were encouraged to enjoy the remainder of their summer vacation, but were also advised to stay disciplined and focus on raising their academic performance for the 2008-2009 school year.
