BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TWENTY-FIVE members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and the St. Kitts/Nevis Fire and Rescue Services are now equipped with the tools to improve the performance of their respective organisations through the utilisation of Strategic Planning and Management.
Friday, the officers graduated from a one-week Workshop dubbed “Improving Performance through Strategic Planning & Management”, which was facilitated by John Pilgrim of the Barbados Productivity Council and held at the NEMA building.
For five days, from Monday, August 18 to Friday, August 22, the officers (middle management in their respective organisations, received information on General Management Thinking, Supervisory Management, Performance Appraisals, Motivation and others; all topics that are pertinent to effectively functioning in their respective capacities.
Pilgrim, during the graduation ceremony, thanked the officers for their input without which, he expressed, the Workshop would not have been the success.
“Reality is about being able to convert ideas and perspectives and knowledge. Converting it to a particular product allows you to share critical changes that you want to make and to deal with the kind of challenges that exist.
I believe that over the last five days we have been able to do that. I believe that over the last five days, without your input, your open, honest and concrete views, the session would not have been a success…Thank you very much for you input, and without that the programme would not have been able to achieve the kinds of results that it did.”
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security Astona Browne also gave remarks at the closing ceremony and indicated that from the “get-go”, the Canadian Government expressed its willingness to assist the Federation with the training of its law enforcement personnel. She further noted that having been trained, the onus is on the officers to deliver. ~~Adz:Right~~
“Let me now challenge you. You have an obligation to deliver. Your respective agencies work collaboratively to deliver on the safety and security agenda or mandate that this ministry has to implement. You rely on us to deliver for you. When you would have delivered, we expect that we would see the fruits and so it’s an ongoing process.
No one-off quick fix will do and we are asking you stick to your commitment. Take solemn promises and attempts to implement and working collaboratively. We are certain that we would see the ultimate outcome, which is the implementation of a zero tolerance policy against crime…which would result in the decrease of crime.”
Acting Commissioner of Police Stafford Liburd admonished the officers in endeavouring to implement that which they have learnt, to be steadfast and maintain discipline.
“…You have spent several hours and time in training. Your thoughts are fresh. You have been reminded of certain things that you may have already known. You may return to your organisation with some positive ideas, wonderful ideas which you might wish to implement instantaneously but you may not succeed, but you cannot give up. Certainly, you cannot give up! You have got to maintain discipline even with the suggestion and the idea, so when the stripes come, the bars come, of whatever decoration that comes with your uniform reflecting upward mobility in the organisation, you can demonstrate that your time spent here was very meaningful and positive and your advancement will be seen as positive to the organisation.”
The graduating class members are Adolph Adams, Calvin Amory, John Bergan, Alonzo Carty, Carl Caines, Joel Caines, Leroy Caines, Trevor Carey, Davron Clarke, Gwendolyn Duncan, Shorna Francis, James Hazel, Stephen Hector, Donna Henderson, Sophia Henry, Elvis Isaac, Daniel Jacobs, Sean John, Timothy Martin, Reynolds Myers, Mackie Smith, Garnet Stapleton, James Stephen, Shelisa Vaughn and Lewis Welsh.
All officers were presented with certificates at the end of the workshop.
